On Friday night, I made my first legal beer purchase at Harris Teeter. I have been 21 since August 5, but have only purchased beer at bars, and one bottle of wine at Harris Teeter. Since beer is my favorite alcoholic beverage, this purchase was a monumental event. What shall I choose? I pondered. Michelob Ultra has been a good friend to me throughout college, so I decided on a six pack of the Mick. Lauren convinced me to get the Tuscan Orange Grapefruit Michelob, since I had already tried the Pomegrante Raspberry, and it sounded pretty tasty.
Here are my thoughts:
Taste: Delicious. Kind of like orange soda, not really beer-y at all. I guess that is both good and bad? Don’t go into it expecting the crisp, dark-ish Michelob taste — if you do, your tastebuds will be confused.
Price: At $5.49 for a six pack, this was probably the cheapest beer available, which definitely factored into my decision.
Buzz factor: I like beer for its taste, not for how drunk it can get me, but come on, I’m 21 and in college, I think it’s acceptable for me to want to get a little buzzed. BUT! This beer was 4.2% alcohol. FOUR POINT TWO!!!!! I thought the lowest that existed was 5%. But no. I had five (FIVE!) beers over four hours, and only got slightly buzzed. Disappointing.
Label design: The orange is a nice change, but still follows Michelob’s identity system. I like the gold “ULTRA” and the glyphs next to “Tuscan Orange.” However, they use Papyrus, which is a typographic decision I just cannot support.
Summary: This beer was more like orange soda. Kel would enjoy it, and it would surely be Nickelodeon-approved, as this beer has the same alcohol percentage as water. However, still delicious, and very cheap. Worth a try, just don’t expect to get drunk.

only helen dear would factor in label design while judging beer.
